What is dry ice?
Dry ice is solid CO2. It has a temperature of -78.5 ºC and is similar to water ice. In contrast, however, it does not melt but becomes gaseous again due to the air pressure. This process is called sublimation.
How cold is dry ice?
Dry ice has a temperature of -78.5 ºC
What is dry ice used for?
Dry ice has a wide range of applications. It is used, for example, for transport refrigeration of food, medicines and samples, for cooling mash and storing fresh fruit, but also for industrial cleaning with special blasting machines. Dry ice is also used in the private sector for cooling drinks or generating fog, e.g. at parties and celebrations.
Is dry ice dangerous?
The correct handling of dry ice is very important. It must not get into the hands of children. Skin and eye contact must be avoided at all costs and proper ventilation must be ensured. Always follow the safety instructions.
How long does dry ice last?
How long dry ice lasts depends on various factors such as insulation of the box, quantity and outside temperature. You can assume the following residual quantities at an outside temperature of 20 ºC. Please note, however, that we cannot guarantee these values.
How do I cool drinks with dry ice?
To cool drinks with dry ice, you need a large container, e.g. a tub, and fill it with water and the drinks to be cooled. Then add the dry ice (pellets or nuggets). On direct contact with the dry ice, the drinks would freeze within seconds and would no longer be consumable. For this reason, it is important to cool the drinks indirectly with the water.
How should dry ice be stored?
Dry ice is best stored in insulated containers such as polystyrene boxes. These should only be opened shortly before using the dry ice. Under no circumstances should dry ice be stored in airtight containers, otherwise there is a risk of explosion. Dry ice must not be stored in cellars, as these will fill up with the gaseous CO2. CO2 is heavier than air and displaces oxygen. There is an acute risk of suffocation. For this reason, sufficient ventilation must always be ensured.
How do you dispose of dry ice?
Dry ice sublimates completely. To dispose of dry ice, place it outside in an open container. Make sure that the container is not accessible to children, animals or unauthorized persons. Do not dispose of dry ice down the drain.
How much dry ice do I need?
Unfortunately, there is no general answer to this question. The quantity required depends on many factors, such as the period of time over which cooling is required, the size of the dry ice, the quantity to be cooled, the outside temperature and the frequency with which the box is opened. You can find an overview of how long dry ice lasts here.
Can the dry ice be collected?
We deliver the dry ice to business customers within a radius of approx. 100 km using our own logistics. If you are interested, please contact us by telephone on +49 2226 82412 60. As a matter of principle, we do not send ice cream to private customers using shipping service providers.
Can the dry ice also be delivered?
We deliver the dry ice to business customers within a radius of approx. 100 km using our own logistics. If you are interested, please contact us by telephone on +49 2226 82412 60. As a matter of principle, we do not send ice cream to private customers using shipping service providers.
Can everything be cooled with dry ice?
No. Dry ice or the gaseous CO2 displaces the oxygen from the air. For this reason, products such as cream cakes cannot be cooled with dry ice as the air is removed from them and they collapse.
What can be cleaned with dry ice?
Cleaning with dry ice is suitable for many surfaces and soiling. However, it should be noted that unlike other media, dry ice is not abrasive. Rust, for example, cannot be removed. You can find more information about dry ice cleaning here. You also have the option of renting blasting systems from us.
When is it worth having your own dry ice production?
The point at which your own dry ice production is worthwhile depends on several factors and cannot be answered in general terms. We will be happy to advise you on this by telephone on +49 2226 82412 60. You can also reach us by e-mail at info@pro-trockeneis.de or via our contact form.
